About Me
I'm María José (Majo), a medical student at the Universidad de Costa Rica, a future pathologist, and someone who has never been able to choose just one thing. Medicine found me in my early years, but Pathology chose me right when I needed it.
Growing up, I had always been fond of the sciences; I loved problem-solving, understanding the intricate ways of the world we live in, and explaining to anyone who would listen my detailed findings. I was never the quiet child, that's for sure!
As I pursued my love of science and medicine, I found myself feeling lonely in my vocation. I didn’t quite understand why Medicine felt distant until I found Pathology, truly.
There's something about the precision of a slide, the way a diagnosis lives in the details you almost missed, the microscopic pieces of artwork, that feels like home. It's the specialty where curiosity is not just welcome, it’s the whole point.
Medicine has never been a stand-still in my life. I’ve spent hours in anatomy labs guiding students through their first practical sessions, coordinated teaching assistant teams, represented my classmates, and collaborated on international research. I've also built websites, designed logos, organized public science fairs, and painted pathology slides in watercolor (inspired by talented pathologists-in-training like Leonie Schön and Meredith Herman). If anything, the best doctors and mentors I've met are the ones who bring something unexpected to the table.
My journey through medicine has been anything but linear. While there have been tough moments, I’ve always been lucky to have the support of the people who love me to keep going. @mediconmajo was born from the belief that we are all human, and that our journey is unique. I created that space to show what medical school really looks like: the hard days, the breakthroughs, the moments where you're not sure you can do it and then somehow you do. I’ve come to learn that determination, curiosity, and grit outlast talent every single time.
This website is an extension of what I’m passionate about. I hope it brings us together!
